Adopt-A-Pet for dogs at Frisco PetSmart
My first Frisco Humane Society foster dog! PDF Print E-mail
By Mary Ann Davis

I have been a rescuer of animals my whole adult life.  After moving to Frisco I met other rescuers at Frisco Humane Society.  I really loved the care they gave the pets, and how particular they were about placing the animals that came into the program.

I have been fostering cats for the past few years and  every adoption event at PetSmart I would pass the dogs and their wonderful foster moms.  Darryl kept asking me if I was ready to foster a dog.  I finally said "yes".  To my suprise, (LOL) they found one for me right away.

There was a little dog in a shelter in Abilene - he had been there for two weeks. Rusty on his rescue day The owners were called and no longer wanted him.  Another rescuer drove him here to be fostered by us.  When Kristin called me, I went to pick him up.  It was love at first sight.  There stood a beautiful Lhasa-Tibetian terrier mix.  He had beautiful brown and red hair. He was a little skinny but otherwise seemed fine. I figured I would find out all of his bad habits when I got him home.  I was wrong, he didn't have any!  Rusty is a gentle, kind and special little dog.  I couldn't help but believe he was sent to us for a special reason.

So my next responsibility was to find Rusty a new home that would love and take care of him for ever so that he would never be unwanted or homeless again.

I received an adoption application from a lady called Laura, and when I talked to her, something just clicked.  Kristin and I went for the home visit and we just felt it was right.  Laura and her husband were home a lot and able to spend time with Rusty.  Their precious son Will has autism; dogs have been used in therapy for these children.  For some reason the dogs can relate to these gentle souls.  Rusty went to them like he had been there forever.  Laura had been praying for a "special dog "for Will. As we left she told us her father just passed away and she even asked him to send a special dog their way.  He did!

These dogs and cats come to us from many different circumstances.  It's hard for us to let them go.  We get very attached to them.  I thought it would be with a heavy heart  that I would deliver Rusty to his new home but I was wrong.  It was a wonderful day for me. I know that this loving family will give Rusty the time and attention I couldn't.  He'll be in his forever home.

People ask us how we can let these pets go after loving them.  Unfortunately, there will always be  more dogs and cats that need us as a pathway to "their" forever home.  If we keep them as our own personal animals, we can no longer care for the unending stream of lost and abused pets that come our way.  We desperately need more foster homes.  Maybe you can  help love a stray enough to let them go.
