Updated July 27th .. notes from Linus' foster mom

*Linus has to wait until he is a year old to get a cart from Eddie's Wheels (something we recently learned)
*He has grown so much........He now weighs 30lbs!
*He has adapted very well to "scooting" around and it does not slow him down a bit!
*He chases his foster mom's cat around the house and loves to play with her other dogs.
*His back legs are stronger now and help him to scoot around faster but they are still not strong enough to hold him up
*He will soon be going back in to his vet to get x-rays done again to see if there is anything else that can be done for him until he can get a cart
*His favorite time of the day is bath time! If his foster mom is giving one of the other foster dogs a bath he gets very jealous and tries to get in the bath tub too :)
*He loves to play outside in his baby pool.
*He is getting better at being housebroken. He has learned to go to the back door when he needs to go potty. Most of the time he is able to control his bowel movements until he gets outside. This is quite an accomplishment for him because this is something that we did not think he would be able to control.
*I hope to bring him to an upcoming adoption event
*He has been an inspiration to his foster family because he does not allow his "disability" to slow him down and with his determination and patience he has shown it is possible to overcome his physical challenge.

Updated June 11th - The big disappointment is that unfortunately Linus's cart is too small for him - he outgrew it between the time we ordered it and it arrived..  We have talked to the manufacturer and they recommend waiting a while before reordering.   We are trying to have the cart altered so that he can use it before we order his "adult" cart.  Here is a video of Linus on the day his cart arrived:

Your response to our request for help was so amazing, we decided to order the first cart for Linus now so that he can enjoy running around and we will still have the funds to buy him another cart when needed.  We are buying the cart from Eddie's Wheels.

Check back for updates - hopefully the next one will be photographs of Linus in his new cart!

Linus is one of a litter of eleven puppies born on February 28th, just five days after his mother was rescued from a local shelter where she had no chance of being adopted and little chance of being rescued since she was so close to giving birth.   The litter of puppies became known as Ocean's Eleven.  The mother, Lilly, is a Catahoula Leopard Dog and the unknown father is probably a Lab.  There is 1 black male, 2 black females, 2 gold females and 6 blond males, one of which is Linus.

He was the runt of the litter and he has a birth defect, or maybe suffered an injury to his spine during birth, which has resulted in him being unable to use his back legs.  He has feeling in his legs but he can't stand on them - he has to drag them behind him when he moves around.    He also has limited control of his bladder and bowels, which is not uncommon in dogs with spinal injuries.

When it became obvious that Linus was not going to be able to walk, his foster mom asked if she could take him to the vet to see if he could be helped.  After a thorough exam and x-ray, our vet said that unfortunately Linus would probably never be able to walk normally.  Linus's foster mom had been bottle feeding him since he was a couple of weeks old - he was unable to compete for milk with his bigger, stronger siblings - and she couldn't bear the thought of putting him to sleep just because he couldn't stand on all four feet.    So Linus went home to his brothers and sisters.

We decided that we would purchase a cart for Linus's back legs so that he can have the comfort and mobility he needs to live a reasonably normal life.  The cart that Linus needs will cost about $350.

If you would like to contribute towards Linus's Cart Fund, please mail your checks (marked "For Linus") to Frisco Humane Society, P.O. Box 2655, Frisco, TX 75034 or you may donate online here using PayPal.

We have not yet decided if Linus will be available for adoption .. much depends on how he progresses as he gets a little older but, who knows, you may see him at our Adopt-A-Pet at Frisco PetSmart *running* around on his new wheels!
